Telangana HRC issues notice to Khammam collector over decomposing of corpses

HYDERABAD: The Telangana State Human Rights Commission (TSHRC) on Friday took suo-moto cognizance of news reports about non-functioning of freezers in the mortuary of Khammam Government Hospital, Khammam, which is resulting in decomposing of dead bodies, and directed the collector and district magistrate, Khammam and the superintendent of the hospital to send their reports.
In the report it was mentioned due to the non-functioning of two freezers at the mortuary, dead bodies, including PME (post-mortem examination), are kept in open for 15 days, emanating foul smell and decomposing of the dead bodies.

The commission also noticed that as per the news report, the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of the hospital had admitted the fact that dead bodies are kept in open due to the non-functioning of freezers. The RMO also cited the non-availability of technicians in the district to repair freezers and added that the hospital will soon get them repaired.
The commission has directed the officials to send their reports by September 18.
