KARWAR: It’s a rare sight, but one to behold. A hornbill has found friends in a family at Honnakeri village in Ankola of Uttara Kannada district that happily feeds it.
It all started when Krishnand Shetty’s family started feeding the bird six months ago. According to forest officials, a pair of hornbills nested on a tree near Hosagadde in Vandige village some months ago.
After the baby hornbill fell out of the nest, the pair looked around for it before flying away. The baby hornbill is said to have befriended the family, often playing with Shetty’s sons Rohit and Akshay.
“It enjoys watching our children play. It lives on a nearby tree, but visits our home frequently,” said Shetty.
Shetty’s wife Maya said it used to feed on fruits earlier. “But now it also eats chapati, poori, jalebi and other stuff that we prepare. Over the last one month, it has developed a taste for fish fry and gruel,” she said.
