HYDERABAD: Municipal administration minister
KT Rama Rao has pitched for the revival of the
Mamunur airport in Warangal and urged Union civil aviation minister
Hardeep Singh Puri to include it in the ‘Udaan scheme’ of the central government to improve regional connectivity.
KT Rama Rao met Hardeep Singh Puri in New Delhi on Monday and pointed out that Warangal being the second largest city in Telangana with 11 lakh population, air connectivity was necessary.
He said in Mamunur, there already was an existing airstrip and its length will have to be increased. The minister said in March this year during a meeting with Hardeep Singh Puri the matter was discussed.
"A team of the
Airports Authority of India (AAI) had to come for a survey but it did not owing to the
Covid situation. But work now has to be taken up on a priority basis,” he said. The minister also additional land would also be acquired for the airport.
“There are proposals for airports at six different locations in the state. Since there is an existing runway in Mamunur, work here can be taken up on a priority basis and speeded up. Work on the other airports will also have to follow subsequently,” he said.
A team of the AAI is expected in a week to carry out a survey at the Mamunur air strip.
