Varanasi: Violent protest after patient missing from BHU's Covid ward found dead

VARANASI: Ajay, a youth from Dhaphi area who had fled from Covid ward of SS hospital of Banaras Hindu University on August 22 night, was found dead near sewage discharge point of same hospital on Monday night.
Detection of body led to unruly scenes at hospital as angry mob of Dhaphi natives gathered and indulged in violence there. Heavy police force was called on campus.
SP City Vikas Chandra Tripathi admitted that recovery of the body of youth, who had fled from Covid ward of BHU hospital on August 22 night, was recovered near sewage discharge point of hospital and it fueled anger of locals started protesting on campus.
In view of it heavy police force was called and officials are trying to pacify the situation, he added.
Family of Ajay had lodged a case of missing with Lanka police on August 22 night when Ajay was not found at Covid ward of BHU hospital. However, he could not be searched by police. When some person visited the area near sewage discharge point of the hospital he noticed a body and raised an alarm after which locals gathered. Trouble started on campus following identification of the body as apart from his family scores of Dhaphi natives also gathered there.
The angry mob damaged many doors and windows of the hospital. Cops kept trying to convince the protesters to avoid indulging in violence. The high voltage drama continued till late night.
It was second incident which brewed resentment. Earlier, in morning a Covid patient had jumped from the same ward at fourth floor of hospital to end his life.
