CHENNAI: The health condition of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee working president and Congress MP from Kanyakumari H Vasanthakumar, who is undergoing treatment for Covid-19 in Chennai’s Apollo Hospitals, has become critical, doctors treating him said on Friday.
Vasanthakumar, 70, is on ECMO and ventilator and is being monitored by a multidisciplinary team of doctors. While the ventilator uses pressure to blow oxygenated air into the lungs, the ECMO pumps blood to a heart-lung machine, which removes carbon dioxide and returns oxygen-filled blood back to tissues.
ECMO allows the blood to "bypass" the heart and lungs, allowing these organs to rest and heal.
“He is being treated currently in the critical care unit by a team of doctors for severe Covid pneumonia, and his clinical condition remains critical,” a medical bulletin issued by the hospital said.
Vasanthakumar was admitted to hospital on August 10 after developing Covid-19 symptoms. He later tested positive for Covid-19.
AICC secretary Sanjay Dutt, who is incharge Tamil Nadu & Puducherry, tweeted: “Just spoke to @iamvijayvasanth , son of @INCTamilNadu working president & MP brother Shri @vasanthakumarH Ji, and learnt that doctors have informed him that he (Vasanthakumar) is critical. Let us join hands in prayers to Almighty God to give him strength to withstand & overcome & get well soon.”
Vasanthakumar owns the leading consumer durable chain Vasanth & Co. He is the brother of former TNCC president and veteran Congress leader Kumari Ananthan. Vasanthakumar is the uncle of Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundararajan.
