Gujarat: Two Amreli jail staffers detained for helping criminals

RAJKOT: Six more persons including two staffers of Amreli jail were detained on Monday for their involvement in the sinister racket of fake medical certificate scam for getting bail that was run by notorious criminals.
The racket was exposed on August 25 with the detention of six history-sheeters who were being given all facilities like mobile phones and good food right inside the barrack.
On Monday, the special investigation team (SIT) headed by RK Karamta, in-charge police inspector, local crime branch, caught six people that included two jail sahayaks who deliberately turned a blind eye to the nefarious activities by taking money from the criminals. They even reached mobile phones and SIM cards to the prisoners.
Those detained were Jairaj Manjariya and Surendra Dhirubhai, both 30, who were serving as jail sahayaks in the Amreli jail. Ironically, they were deployed in the surveillance squad. Others detained were Kanti Vala, Suresh alias Sardul Haadagra, Shailesh Chandu and Irfan alias Taalki Khimani. These four accused have several crimes registered against them.
Shailesh is accused in nine offences including a triple murder case, attempt to murder, loot, assault, GUJCTOC Act and prohibition while Irfan has eight offences registered against him including making fake documents, threatening, keeping weapon illegally and ferrying liquor. Kanti is accused in a murder case and harassment and Suresh has offences like rape, cheating, assault and attempt to loot registered against him.
This entire scam was being operated from the VIP barrack of the jail by smuggling in phones with the help of two jail staffers. The intention behind getting the medical certificates of family members was to enable the history-sheeters to get bail. These history-sheeters then planned to escape once released. Earlier six persons including a Rajkot-based doctor who allegedly issued the medical certificates without carrying the necessary check of the criminals’ family members.
