Lucknow: In a recent development in the rape case that had convicted BJP MLA Kuldip Singh Sengar, the Uttar Pradesh government is studying a CBI recommendation asking for action to be taken against senior administrative and police officers of the state for negligence in the case.

The CBI has asked "appropriate action" to be taken against IAS officer Aditi Singh who was then DM of Unnao and is currently the DM of Hapur as well as IPS officers Neha Pandey - who had served as the SP of Unnao between February 2016 and October 2017, and Pushpanjali Devi who replaced her and held the post of SP between October , 2017 and April 2018. The rape had taken place in June, 2017. While Pandey is currently with the Intelligence Bureau, Devi is DIG/SP, Railways in Gorakhpur.

Asthabhuja Singh, who was the additional SP of Unnao has also been recommended for action by the central agency.

CBI has said it had sent the recommendation to the government in the second week of August to take "appropriate action" against the officers. The agency had questioned both Pandey and Devi in 2018. While Pandey was questioned over an allegation by the rape survivor that the police deterred her to name Sengar in her statement, Devi, who had later replaced Pandey was questioned over the allegation that the police refused to entertain the victim's complaint when her father was assaulted brutally by Sengar's men. He died later in police custody.

A senior home department official told ET that the government is still studying the recommendations. UP DGP HC Awasthy said the recommendation is being considered by the government and the police department will conduct an enquiry against the said police officers if an order is issued for the same by the government.

Sengar, now ex-MLA from Bangarmau had been sentenced for life imprisonment by a Delhi court in December last year for raping a 17-year old in Unnao on June 4, 2017, when she had approached him for a job. He had also been found guilty of culpable homicide for the death of the victim's father.
