PURULIA: A small, nondescript hamlet nestled in the wilderness of Junglemahal, over 1,780km from Mumbai, watched with curiosity as actor Rhea Chakraborty — under probe since the death of her actor boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput — was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Tuesday.
Rhea and her family trace their roots to Tunturi village in Purulia’s Baghmundi, where her highly respected landlord grandfather Sirish had earned the sobriquet of ‘Diwan Sahib’.
The family’s sprawling, but dilapidated, ancestral home in the village becomes a hub of festivities every Durga Puja, which turns 323 this year.

Though Rhea’s kin were known and respected in the whole of Baghmundi for their philanthropic activities — Sirish donated 28 bigha land for a school and health centre in the village in 1967 — there are few people who know the family’s history and connection with the Sushant case. “I still can’t believe the news,” said Bir Singh Mahato, a former MP and once headmaster of Tanturu High School that was built on land donated by Rhea’s grandfather. It is the only school in the village till date.

“Theirs is an illustrious family. Both sons of Sirish babu did well in life. They contributed a lot for the well-being of villagers. Though nobody from the family lives in the village now, the school and the health centre that were built on land donated by them are still being used by people here. We are sanguine that the truth (about the Sushant case) will soon be unearthed,” Mahato said.

The former MP recalled the day when Rhea had visited the village with her father Indrajit Chakraborty some 22 years ago. “He donated some money to the local temple. The money was used to build the store room. That was the last time somebody from the family visited this place,” he added.
