Bihar: CBI seizes papers from Nawada head post office in Rs 5.5 crore embezzlement case

A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team on Tuesday seized documents from the Nawada head post office in connection with its probe into the embezzlement of more than Rs 5.5 crore of public money. The CBI sleuths also quizzed some officials.

PATNA: A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team on Tuesday seized documents from the Nawada head post office in connection with its probe into the embezzlement of more than Rs 5.5 crore of public money. The CBI sleuths also quizzed some officials.
The CBI had registered an FIR on March 14 this year against head post office cashier Ambika Chaudhary and postman Kapildev Yadav. Ambika died due to ailment after his arrest while Kapildev is out on bail.
The embezzlement case was originally lodged with Town police station in Nawada on May 9 last year. Later, the state government on November 1, 2019 recommended the case for a CBI probe.
Sources said the postal department had initially unearthed the embezzlement of Rs2.5 crore. “Altogether Rs3.5 crore was withdrawn by the cashier from SBI main branch in Nawada between January 16 and 28, 2019. However, only Rs1 crore was shown deposited in head post office treasury,” CBI sources said. Later, the embezzled amount increased up to Rs5.5 crore.
“Ambika and Kapildev had allegedly purchased immovable properties worth several crores in Nawada,” they said.
The CBI is also investigating the embezzlement of huge amount of public money from Patna GPO. An FIR was lodged on October 9 last year against five postal department employees and some other unknown persons.
