LUCKNOW: After been delayed for half a year due to Covid-19 pandemic, Kanpur’s Chakeri airport new civil enclave is now expected to be completed by January 2022. After completion, the airport will be able to handle over 40 per cent more passengers annually against the current capacity.
Currently only two flights operate a day, but 16 months later the airport will start handling 12 to 14 flights including international as well, said the airport director Bhrigu Kant Jha of Chakeri airport.

With a passenger handling capacity of 300 an hour, the Chakeri Airport terminal will spread over 6,218 square meter area.
“We have estimated over 2 lakh passengers to use the airport service annually from current 85,000. The airport will be suitable for parking of three Airbus-321 type aircraft and a car parking area to accommodate around 150 vehicles,” said the APD.
Due to covid-19 pandemic the project has got delay by six months, but it will kick start from next month,” he added.
The terminal will be a 4-star GRIHA (Green Buildings Rating System India) rated energy-efficient building equipped with eight check-in counters, in-line baggage handling system, two conveyors belts for passengers, well connected with lifts. The centrally AC terminal will have interiors depicting the culture of the city.

To be energy-efficient the building is designed in such a way, that it uses maximum natural sunlight to illuminate the terminal. Further, eye-soothing lights and greenery with drip irrigating wall plants will be used in the airport to give it aesthetic look.
The airport authority of India along with state government is working to upgrade and develop new airports in Uttar Pradesh in order to fulfil the demands of increase in airlines passenger traffic. In Lucknow Amausi airport is being upgraded to handle 10 million passengers a year both domestic and international, while Kushinagar airport will be ready for international flights by next two months. The state government is working on blueprint to expand current airstrip of Sonbhadra into an airport to boost tourism.
