HYDERABAD: The
first Covid-19 patient in the country to receive a double-lung transplant was discharged from a city hospital on Friday. The 32-year-old patient who hails from Chandigarh received lungs from a brain-dead person in Kolkata, was suffering from sarcoidosis, leading to fibrosis of the lungs.
Doctors from a city-based hospital, who were treating 32-year-old Rizwan, put him on the
lung transplant waitlist after they observed that his condition was rapidly deteriorating.
A
double lung transplant was the only permanent option. The situation worsened when the patient contracted Covid-19 while waiting for the lungs.
“Fortunately, a match to his lungs was found in a person declared brain dead in Kolkata, and the harvested lungs were airlifted to Hyderabad,” said Dr Sandeep Attawar, transplant surgeon, Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospitals.
