Saturday, September 12: Parts of coastal Maharashtra and Goa are set to witness heavy rains and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours. Accordingly, an orange alert has been issued over the region for the day.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the combination of an off-shore trough running from northern Maharashtrian coast to the coast of Kerala, and an east-west shear zone running across peninsular India is set to produce heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over coastal Maharashtra and Goa. Strong surface-level winds are also likely to bombard the coastal areas.

In view of these predictions, the IMD has placed the two territories on orange alert, thereby instructing the residents to ‘be prepared’ for the rough weather conditions.

Within the state, the coastal districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg will be under the orange alert on Saturday due to the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rains, whereas the likes of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Dhule, Nandurbar, Pune, Kolhapur, and Satara will be under a yellow watch (‘be aware’ of weather situation) owing to the high chances of heavy showers.

Moreover, Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, and Satara will all retain their yellow-level advisories on Sunday as well.

The chances of precipitation over Mumbai will be as high as 60% on Saturday, drop to 20% on Sunday, and then rise to 80% on Monday and stay there for the rest of the week, as per The Weather Channel’s 10-day forecast. The wet conditions will keep the daytime temperature hovering around the 30°C mark in the financial capital.

Wet weather visited coastal Maharashtra and Goa on Friday, September 11 as well, with rainfall and thunderstorms being observed in most places across the region. Many parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region experienced loud spells of thunder and lightning accompanied by rain from afternoon onwards, with waterlogging reports emerging from Dombivli and Kalyan.

Meanwhile, since the beginning of the monsoon season, the state of Maharashtra has collectively recorded 1014.4 mm rainfall, which is about 13% more than what the state typically receives in the period between June 1 and September 11. In the same period, coastal Maharashtra has registered precipitation worth 3291.1 mm—a 23% ‘excess’ as compared to its long-term average for this time frame.
