BENGALURU: The state government aims to commission a skilling institution on a 10-acre campus near Nandi Hills in about a year and half. Karnataka’s Department of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship is implementing the project on a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with the help of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Indian Institute of Technology-Roorkee.
The institute will coach master trainers who will train students at skilling institutes such as industrial training institutes (ITI) across India.

“Several public and private sector organisations including ONGC, GAIL, JSW, Bosch, L&T and Canara Bank have supported the project using their CSR funds, and when it comes up, we are confident it will meet our expectations and cater to modern day industrial needs,” S Selvakumar, secretary at the skill development and entrepreneurship department, told ET.

“We are looking at supplying trained teachers not just for Karnataka, but for other states as well… We are sure they can meet international expectations in terms of skills. We will be flying in super trainers from overseas, including places in Germany and South Korea, to make our students master trainers capable of skilling people in large numbers,” he said. “That is the reason why we are setting up the facility near the international airport.”

The government is spending 15 crore for the first phase of the project. The institute will provide residential training in basic skills like masonry, plumbing and carpentry.

“We will provide training in advanced skills in other technology-related sectors based on our assessment of the market and demand,” Selvakumar said.

Deputy chief minister CN Ashwath Narayan and Chikkaballapur district in-charge minister K Sudhakar launched the project work near Muddenahalli on Tuesday.
