Gujarat: Viral video shows nursing staff assaulting Covid patient

A purported video showing nursing and security staff slapping a patient after pinning him down to the ground in the dedicated Covid-19 hospital on the campus of state government-run Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay (PDU) Hospital went viral on Thursday.

In the 55-second video, a paramedic is seen pinning the patient to the ground by placing his knee on his chest even as others hold his hand and security guards, one of them wielding a baton, look on.

“Didn’t I tell you not to do it,” the paramedic wearing a white PPE is heard telling the patient even as the patient pleads, “Wait, please wait!”

The paramedic is heard saying that policemen were coming and as the patient tries to wriggle out, the security guard wielding the baton flattens him to the ground by placing his foot on the patient’s shoulder, while the paramedic slaps the patient on his face.

“”Nothing will happen to you due to corona,” a female staff member is overheard telling the patient.

A discussion on the Covid-19 pandemic was held in the Rajya Sabha Thursday, during which Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan reiterated that the lockdown imposed on March 24 prevented 14-29 lakh cases and 37,000-78,000 deaths. Vardhan’s statements, however, did not sit well with the Opposition, which targeted the government for the sudden lockdown and for leaving migrant labourers in the lurch, and accused it of failing to support states financially.
