Local sports: Jefferson boys, Milan girls earn titles

MILAN – Jefferson’s boys and Milan’s girls were the winners of the Milan Puddle Jumpers Cross Country Invitational on Tuesday.

William Robinson of Jefferson was the boy’s winner, running 17:04.9 to finish less than a second in front of St. Mary Catholic Central’s Andrew Wickenheiser.

Brayden Humes of Milan was third followed by Carter McCallister, Ethan Wilgocki and Isaac Merkel of Jefferson.

Jefferson’s Garret Thomas took ninth as the Bears finished with 25 points to 44 for SMCC, 81 for Milan and 104 for Flat Rock.

SMCC’s Jack Palmer was seventh and Kenny Carlman of Flat Rock eighth.

Flat Rocks Meredith Stull was the girls winners with Hannah Segrist, Emma Burrough, Ella Racette, Sabrinna Smallwood and Haleigh Hoffman of Milan running 2, 6, 7, 9, 15.

That gave the Big Reds 24 points, 16 better than runner-up Grosse Ile. SMCC was third with 60, led by Cailynne Flint in fifth.

Jefferson did not have a full team, but placed Jenna Pilachowski third and Riley Peer fourth.

CROSS COUNTRY

Mason rules jamboree

ADRIAN – Erie Mason’s boys made their debut in the Tri-County Conference by winning Tuesday’s league jamboree.

The Eagles scored 55 points with Jacob Ansel 5th, Jackson Ansel 6th, Ethan Cuschieri 12th, Carson Rose 15th, and Jackson Iocoangeli 17th.

Summerfield was second with 61 and Whiteford third with 69.

Summerfield’s Brandon Thompson placed second with teammates Evan Suydam and Josh Jenson eighth and 10th, respectively. Keegan Masters and Luke Murphy took seventh and ninth for Whiteford.

Morenci won the girls meet with Summerfield, Whiteford and Mason finishing 5-6-7.

Summerfield’s Alexandria Ausmus was fifth and teammate Rachel Arquette 15th. Annie Gapp paced Whiteford in eighth. Gabbi Colburn (32nd) and Sonia Garcia (33rd) led Mason in the girls race.

Carlson girls win

GIBRALTAR – Grace Norton ran 21:17, Brooke Cifaldi 23:13, Arianna Pate 23:13.1 and Julia Mills 23:18 to lead Gibraltar Carlson’s girls to a 24-33 win over Allen Park Tuesday.

Carson Blake ran 17:49 and Alec Panter 17:56 in a 25-36 boys loss.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Monroe wins opener

YPSILANTI – Emma Chappell collected 14 kills and 8 digs and hit .600 as Monroe opened its season with a five-set victory over Ypsilanti Tuesday.

Ella Oetjens (17 assists, 6 aces), Anna Tedora (9 digs) and Hannah Hedges (6 kills) also played well for the Trojans, who won the junior varsity match in three sets.

Mason tops Whiteford

OTTAWA LAKE – Erie Mason pulled out a 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-13 win over Whiteford Tuesday.

Ashley Bell rang up 12 kills and 26 digs. Angela Sweeney, Olivia Doom, Ellie Trainor and Jaci Fowler also made key plays for the Eagles.

Kyleigh Borowicz (20 kills), Aly VanBrandt (16 digs) and Alaina Andrews (37 assists) led Whiteford.

Whiteford took the JV match.

Papalas leads Carlson

GIBRALTAR – Nadia Papalas notched 21 assists and 6 kills for Gibraltar Carlson in a 25-17, 25-10 25-11 win over Taylor Tuesday.

Other Marauders standouts were Megan DeSantis, Madison Wiseman, Allyson Dillon and Skylar Zaranka.

Summerfield rallies

PETERSBURG – Summerfield overcame a slow start to beat Britton Deerfield 20-25, 22-25, 25-11, 25-23, 15-6 Tuesday.

Olivia LaRocca, Bre Weston and Kailee LaPlante led the offense and Sophia LaRocca, Sydney Redlinger and Grace Kalb also played well.

Another tight win

TEMPERANCE – Bedford’s No. 1 doubles team of Niko Schmieder and James Rupli won their third straight tiebreaker in the third set to lead the Mules to a 7-1 win over Monroe Tuesday.

Straight-set wins came from Blaise Volpi-Donovan VanHorn, Noah Kaplan, Tyler Krupp and Jaden Turner.

Penalty hurts Monroe

Monroe gave up a penalty kick goal three minutes into the game then played even with Ann Arbor Pioneer the rest of the way in a 1-0 loss.

Braden Setzler was strong in goal and Mitchell Meier, Noah Stein and Colin Charnock played well.

Bedford wins two

OTTAWA LAKE – Morgan Decker shot 48 and Elyse Czarnik 50 as Bedford shot 202 to top Pinckney (216) and Chelsea (221) at The Legacy Tuesday.

Nolan leads Bulldogs

HUDSON – Ellie Noland shot 52, but Summerfield fell 214-229 to Hudson Tuesday.

PREP SWIMMING

Waterstradt leads

TRENTON – Olivia Waterstradt won the 50 and 100-yard freestyles for Dundee during a 99-87 loss to Trenton Tuesday.

Emerson Hernandez qualified for the state meet in two events for the Vikings.
