With Mumbai experiencing a surge in cases of coronavirus, a shortage of beds has been reported in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) for the critically ill patients which require beds with artificial respiration equipment.
As per reports, only 67 beds with artificial respiration are vacant. Therefore, if the number of patients continues to increase in the same manner, the situation is likely to worsen for the treatment of critically ill patients. The number of patients in Mumbai is increasing by around 2,000 every day. The growth rate in Mumbai has also gone beyond 1.2.
The BMC had earlier tried to increase the number of ICU beds with the help of private hospitals. Patients without symptoms were asked to seek home isolation and were not to be admitted to a private hospital. According to the civic body, there are a total of 1,732 beds in the ICUs in Mumbai out of which 141 beds were vacant on Wednesday whereas 1,102 beds for artificial respiration equipment were vacant out of which only 67 beds are left.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra has clocked 23,365 cases of the coronavirus in the last 24 hours taking the COVID-19 tally in the state to 11,21,221. On the other hand, the number of recovered patients rose by 17,559, taking the tally of recovered cases to 7,92,832. The recovery rate in the state has dipped to 70.71 per cent, as against the national average of 78.53 per cent.
