In Short

  • The rivalry between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians is referred to as the ‘Indian El Clasico’
  • Mumbai Indians beat CSK in their last encounter in the finals of IPL 2019 and lifted their fourth title
  • Even the overall tally suggests that Mumbai Indians have been the favourites, leading the battle 17-11

The Indian Premier League encounter between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings is often dubbed as the ‘Indian El Clasico’.

It is the greatest rivalry in the history of the IPL, and it is going to be no less during IPL 2020.

The 13th edition of the IPL will kick off with this rivalry on Saturday. In the last time that these two teams clashed, it was the Mumbai Indians who won and they went on to lift the trophy last year.

Chennai Super Kings will surely be looking to take revenge for that clash, and the CSK bowling coach Lakshmipathy Balaji said that it will be another exciting encounter, but also hoped that this time around the CSK will ‘cross the line’.

“It is always going to be two tough teams, two brilliant teams over the period of time Mumbai Indians and CSK. It is a great opportunity for each and every one of us. It is going to be interesting and as the audience expect, there will be a lot of thrilling moments. I am also waiting for the match. Hopefully this time we will cross the line,” he said.

Mumbai Indians dominate the clash

There is a reason why Lakshmipathy Balaji says that. In the last four encounters between the two sides, it is the Mumbai Indians that won all four last year. The last two of them were in the playoff stages of IPL 2019, one being the first qualifier and the other being the finals.

Even the overall tally suggests that Mumbai Indians have been the favourites, leading the battle 17-11. Of the four times these two teams have played in the finals of the tournament, Mumbai have won three of them in 2013, 2015 and 2019. It was only once in 2010, that the CSK triumphed over MI in the finals.

It is again that time of the year where this rivalry will be renewed, and let’s see who triumphs this time around?
