In Short

  • KXIP loser Super Over battle to Delhi Capitals
  • KL Rahul loses his first match as an IPL captain
  • KXIP were given a wrong one-short call by the umpire

Just like the 2019 World Cup final between England and New Zealand, a similar kind of drama was repeated on Day 2 of IPL in the UAE. Umpire Kumar Dharmasena had punished New Zealand by gifting an extra run for overthrow to Ben Stokes, a total of 6 runs were awarded instead of 5, which led to a Super Over in the World Cup final. New Zealand lost the game with everything working against them. Something similar happened with KXIP today, on KL Rahul’s captaincy debut.

Today, the match between Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab turned into a Super Over after a wrong one-short call in the penultimate over ruined Punjab’s chances. All of Mayank Agarwal’s heroics went down the drain as KXIP lost the Super Over battle against Shreyas Iyer’s Delhi Capitals.

In the third delivery of the 19th over, bowled by Kagiso Rabada, Mayank Agarwal was bowled the perfect yorker but he managed to angle it to long on while Chris Jordan quickly helped his partner run back for the second. Mayank exhaustingly ran for the second but, however, the square-leg umpire called it a one-short, giving only a single to KXIP.

The ask was 13 off the last over, after Rabada’s 12-run 19th over, and Punjab lost Agarwal after a valiant 89 off 60 and Chris Jordan on the final two deliveries. While the scores were already leveled on the 3rd ball of the final over, it remained so till the end as Marcus Stoinis pulled off a thriller. The game, naturally, ended into a Super Over.

Punjab performed horribly in the Super Over scoring only 2/2, as Kagiso Rabada got KL Rahul and Nicholas Pooran, giving Delhi a target of only 3. Rishabh, who came out to bat with Iyer, finished the game in 3 deliveries. Delhi Capitals, once again won a Super Over in the IPL since their 2019 IPL win against KKR.
