Nothing has been fair during the last six months of our lives. Almost everything in our lives have changed — most of it with very little warning.

So we applaud the actions of the Chautauqua Nursing & Rehabilitation Center for coming through with new policies for visitation in light of recent complaints by families. Before COVID-19, there was never a problem getting into any nursing home or care facility.

With the older generation most susceptible to coming down with the virus, there have been precautions put in place. Some, without question, are very restrictive.

Starting today, however, the policies begin at the Chestnut Road facility in Dunkirk. There are three options: in-person visitation will take place on the front porch; a closed window visit or a virtual visit done either via SKYPE or Facetime.

There are guidelines with each of these options that must be followed. There’s a good reason for this as the facility has not reported any active COVID-19 cases among residents. “Doesn’t that fact alone allow for any understanding that we’re doing something right?” said Nora Ramirez, infection control registered nurse.

You cannot argue with that type of success.
