Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer has played down fears Ravi Ashwin suffered a serious injury during their victory over Kings XI Punjab at the 2020 Indian Premier League.

Ricky Ponting’s Delhi beat Kings XI in a super over in Dubai on Sunday, after both teams made 157-8 from their 20 overs.

India spinner Ashwin took two wickets in his first over against his former franchise but was then forced off the field after injuring his arm.

The 34-year-old looked in much discomfort as he made his way off and there were fears he had suffered a dislocation as he cradled his left arm.

But Delhi captain’s has suggested the injury is not as serious as first feared and says Ashwin could even be fit for their next match, with Kings XI set to face Rajasthan Royals on Sunday.

‘I briefly spoke to Ashwin, and he said he’ll be ready for the next game,’ Iyer said at the post-match presentation.

‘But at the end of the day it will be the physio’s decision. He’s a strong-minded guy and hopefully he will be available.’

Delhi struggled with the bat but a superb 20-ball half-century from Marcus Stoinis saw them post 157-8 having been 13-3 and 96-6.

Kings XI could then only match Delhi’s total despite 89 from opener Mayank Agarwal, with Stoinis taking two wickets with the final two balls to force the match into a super over.

From there, South Africa and Delhi fast bowler Kagiso Rabada took two wickets in as many balls as Kings XI sunk to a disappointing defeat.

Delhi Capitals skipper Iyer added: ‘It was difficult to see the game turning in different directions, but we are used to this.

‘Even last season we faced these type of situations. Rabada is the winning performer, and the way Stoinis batted was game-changing.’
