Impressive Close Brothers Cesarewitch Trial winner Ocean Wind is not qualified for the big race, it has emerged.

The four-year-old, trained by Roger Teal, was cut to 6/1 favourite by the bookmakers after taking his warm-up race with ease on Saturday.

Punters snapped up double-figure prices about the four-and-a-half length hero, hoping he would strike again at Newmarket on October 10.

But the BHA has said the Champion Bumper sixth cannot run in the major handicap, because he had not had three runs by the deadline for the weights being published on September 12.

Teal was waiting for confirmation from racing's ruling body on Monday, ahead of tomorrow's deadline for taking horses out of the 2m 2f marathon.

"It's very frustrating," he said.

"As far as we knew he was qualified and the ante-post favourite.

"He won the trial very well and we were all excited.

"The whole plan was that race and the Cesarewitch, so I don't know what's going to happen now."

Most bookmakers have removed the son of Teofilo from the betting for the stayers' contest at the home of Flat racing.

A spokesman for the BHA said: "Sadly the horse is not qualified to run as he had not had three runs in Flat races by the deadline for the weights being published, which is a requirement for early closing races.”

Bookmakers Paddy Power are refunding punters who have already backed the dual Flat winner.

Their representative Paul Binfield said: “We realised on Sunday that Ocean Wind wasn’t eligible for the race and immediately took him out of the betting, voiding and refunding all ante post wagers on him.

"It’s bad luck on anyone who did back him as he looks a potentially high-class stayer and is further evidence of Roger Teal’s training skills as he has already proved brilliant with sprinters as shown with Oxted and he now looks highly adept with horses over any distance.”
