State Board of Elections: 'Unprecedented' demand slowing online ballot-tracking service

New system will let North Carolina voters track their ballots through the process, but it's taking time to get that moving, state says.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A massive spike in absentee ballot requests has caused a backlog at local boards of elections, delaying for some voters the initial steps it takes to process a request and send out a ballot, the State Board of Elections said Monday.
As a result, some voters are getting what looks like an error message from the state's new online ballot tracking system, which is meant to let voters track their ballot through the process.

The site can't track a voter until they're in the BallotTrax system, state board spokesman Patrick Gannon said Monday, and they won't be in the system until their local board of elections processes their request.

"We encourage voters to be patient while county boards of elections across North Carolina work diligently to process the surge in ballot requests," Gannon said in an email. "Voters concerned about the status of their ballot request may contact their county board of elections."

As of Monday morning, voters using BallotTrax and whose request had not been processed got an "invalid credentials" message from the system, telling them their information "doesn’t match any voters with a current absentee request on file."
