The Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority or OMMA has signed a contract with Florida-based cannabis traceability company Metrc for the implementation of a seed-to-sale tracking system for the state's medical marijuana program.
The contract creates a statewide system to track marijuana plants and products from a plant's growth stage through sale to patients.
OMMA said that the tracking system is part of its larger efforts to ensure accountability and safety within the state's medical marijuana industry. The implementation of the system is expected to take up to six months.
"The seed-to-sale system will greatly expand our compliance capabilities and improve the effectiveness and speed of any future recall efforts. It will also allow us to detect unusual patterns that may indicate product diversion," said OMMA Interim Director Dr. Kelly Williams.
Metrc offers integration features with many seed-to-sale software systems used at an individual-level by licensees. All commercial licensees in Oklahoma will be required to either integrate with or input their information into the state's seed-to-sale system.
In a separate statement, Metrc said it will commence work immediately to launch its system by February 2021 for Oklahoma's almost 10,000 licensees. With the addition of Oklahoma, Metrc now holds exclusive contracts with state regulators in 14 states and the District of Columbia.
"We're honored Oklahoma selected Metrc to implement the state's first cannabis tracking system. With one of the fastest growing medical cannabis markets in the United States, the OMMA has done a tremendous job developing this new industry, and we're excited to support its ongoing success," said Jeff Wells, CEO of Metrc.
Oklahoma's legal medical marijuana market was launched in 2018. Today, it has the highest number of dispensaries per resident and more than 300,000 patients, Metrc noted.
