Boyzone biopic on the way as band in talks with Hollywood film studios

ONE OF Ireland's biggest boy bands of the 1990's is set to hit the big screen.

One of Louis Walsh's first successes, Boyzone was formed in 1993 and throughout their career held nine Number 1 spots in the Irish charts.

The band parted ways in the year 2000 but reunited seven years later; they eventually broke up for good in 2019, but still have an army of devoted fans who sang, laughed and cried over the band during their youth.

Now Boyzone member Shane Lynch has revealed a biopic on the band's beginning and rise to fame is to be shown on the big screen, as they are in talks with a number of Hollywood films studios and production companies to create a biopic.

Speaking on the chat show Lorraine, Shane Lynch said he would love for the former One Direction star Zayn Malik to play him in the upcoming film, saying "I've always looked at him as being similar to me-- edgy and different".

He told The Sun on Sunday about the "amazing" project, promising the Boyzone story will have "an Irish tone".

The film will go as far back as exploring the members in their school days, when stardom and celebrity status was nothing but a dream.

"We’re trying to avoid the whole musical side of things," he said.

"It’s about the rawness of Ireland and growing up in working-class families and making it into one of the biggest bands in the world.

"We’re trying not to go too much into the music industry side of things, as that can be a little bit boring. It’s about the early days and how we ended up being world-famous."

The eagerly anticipated film will also look into the tragic passing of member Stephen Gately, who died suddenly in 2009 of a congenital heart defect.

The news of a biopic comes just days after Dublin City Council voted unanimously to name a Dublin park in honour of the late star.
