Girls Tennis Roundup: Willmar Cardinals eek out a tough win at Fergus Falls

Willmar beats Otters 4-3 in a Central Lakes Conference match

FERGUS FALLS — The Willmar girls tennis team emerged with a hard-fought, 4-3 Central Lakes Conference victory over Fergus Falls on Tuesday.

The Cardinals earned victories at Nos. 3 and 4 singles and Nos. 1 and 3 doubles.

Two matches went three sets.

At No. 3 doubles, Willmar’s Rebecca Laurence and Kylee Berget beat Paige Pearson and Amber Anderson 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.

At No 1 singles, the Otters’ Ellie Collbeck defeated the Cardinals’ Alyssa Morrell 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7).

Willmar (2-3 Central Lakes, 3-5 overall) next plays Sartell at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Wilmar.

The closest matches were at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles.

At No. 2, Litchfield’s Kelsey Ballard and Emma DeWolf defeated Alyssa tyson and Annan Hanson 6-3, 7-5.

At No 3, the Dragons’ Sydney Jackman and Taylor Draeger beat Maddie Fenner and Anna Sharkey 2-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Host Hutchinson earned victories at Nos. 3 and 4 singles and Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to beat New London-Spicer in a Wright County Conference match.

The No. 3 doubles match was critical for Hutchinson. The Tigers’ Clarie Schweim and Lauren Nelson beat Brooke Adelman and Jordan Proehl 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.

The Wildcats’ Ava Hanson won at No. 1 singles, beating Hannah Ladwig 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg was unbeaten in singles competition during its victory over MACCRAY at Benson High School.

In a matchup of seniors at No. 1 singles, Stacy Johnson defeated Haley Rhode 6-2, 6-1. Elise Ducan, Hannah Helms and Elle Kletscher each added straight-set wins.

Benson/KMS earned victories at first and second doubles. The Wolverines’ lone triumph came at No. 3 doubles. The duo of Lillian Farnsworth and Malinda Peterson got by the team of Lily Miller and Milgo Abdi 6-1, 6-1.

MACCRAY competes in the West Central Conference tournament on Tuesday. Benson/KMS plays at Minnewaska at 4:30 p.m. Thursday from Glenwood.

The No. 1 doubles match was the closest. The Thunder Hawks’ Abby Gremmels and Mathea Jorgenson beat Julia Marthaler and Gaby Dickinson 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-4 tiebreaker).

The second doubles match also was close. Nina Fitzkappes and Annie Marquardt beat Sauk Centre’s Lisa Weir and Kate McKeown 7-5, 6-4.
