RAICHUR: The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday passed a bill to declare Indian Institute of Information Technology, Raichur, and four other new IIITs as institutes of national importance, enabling them to award degrees. The Lok Sahba had cleared the Indian Institutes of Information Technology Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2020, in March.
The other four institutes being developed under the public-private partnership model are in Surat, Bhopal, Bhagalpur and Agartala.
The premier institution in Raichur started functioning in August 2019 and is being operated from its transit campus at IIT-Hyderabad. The first batch of students who opted for BTech in computer science and technology were admitted there.
“IIIT Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2020 will entitle the institutions to use the nomenclature of Bachelor of Technology or Master of Technology (MTech) or PhD degree as issued by a university or institution of national importance,” Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said.
67 acres of land identified for Raichur campus
These IIITs, at present, are functioning as Societies registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. They will now be covered under the IIIT (PPP) Act, 2017, similar to the other 15 IIITs established under the scheme in PPP mode.
The Karnataka government has identified 67 acres of land at Vadavatti for the Raichur campus. “A tender has been called to prepare a detailed project report to set up the campus. As a makeshift arrangement, a block at Government Engineering College in Yermarus in the taluk has been kept ready for IIT students. Three departments can be set up in the block. If classes are shifted from Hyderabad, this year’s academic sessions can be held in Raichur,” said BJP leader Trivikram Joshi.
“The government should complete all the works of the new campus. This will promote business activities and growth in the region,” Raichur activist Razak Ustaad said.
