Bangladesh on Tuesday registered 28 more COVID-19 deaths, with the country’s death toll from the novel coronavirus reaching 5,007.

Besides, 1,557 new coronavirus cases were detected in the 24 hours till 8:00am Tuesday, taking the total cases to 3,52,178 in the country, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.

Bangladesh on March 8 logged its first COVID-19 cases and the first death from the virus 10 days later on March 18.

The country has passed 199 days since the first cases were detected, but over half of the deaths have occurred in the last 68 days.

Until July 16, the number of country’s COVID-19 deaths was 2,496.

The average daily deaths until the 130th day since the virus infection broke out in the country were 19 while the next 68 days witnessed nearly 37 deaths per day on average.

Over the past few weeks, the rate of COVID-19 deaths, number of deaths per 100 confirmed cases, has gone up.

The overall death rate is now 1.42 per cent but it was 1.86 per cent in the 28th week, 2.04 per cent in the 27th week, 1.65 per cent in the 26th week and 1.83 per cent in the 25th week.

The rate in the ongoing 29th week is 1.96 per cent.

COVID-19 patients are also dying at home.

Since May 17, at least 652 COVID-19 patients have died at home and 34 have been brought dead to hospitals, according to DGHS data. 

The DGHS on Tuesday said that 18 of the new 28 dead died in Dhaka division, four in Chattogram, three in Khulna and one each died in Rajshahi, Sylhet and Rangpur divisions.

Thirteen of the 28 were aged above 60 years, six between 51and 60 years, seven between 41and 50 years, one between 21and 30 years and another was a minor below 10 years.

Seventeen of them were male and 11 female.

So far, 2,60,790 COVID-19 patients have recovered in the country, including 2,073 in the past 24 hours.
