Web Registration: Each selected news site has to pay govt Tk 10,000
The government has fixed Tk 10,000 as fee for registration of selected news portals and online editions of newspapers.
An order from the Ministry of Information also said the annual renewal fee for the registration is Tk 5,000. Also, a surcharge of Tk 2,000 has to be paid on the registration.
Another Tk 5,000 has to be paid if any news portal or online edition of a newspaper fails to clear the surcharge within a month after the deadline for the payment, said the order, issued yesterday.
The order mentioned three codes to deposit the amounts in treasury invoice. For payment of registration fee, the code is 1422212, for renewal 1422335, and for surcharge payment, it is 1422406.
On July 30, a list of 34 news portals was published for the first phase of registration.
The cabinet on August 31 approved the draft National Online Media Policy, 2017 (Amendment 2020) at a virtual meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, bringing some amendments and keeping the provision.
Then on September 3, the information ministry selected to register the online editions of 92 dailies in Dhaka metropolitan and other divisional cities of the country. Initially, those who were allowed to register were also requested to complete the registration within 20 working days from the date of publication of a government notification by submitting the fees following the government rules and regulations.
Previously, there was no clear guideline over registration qualifications and disqualifications of online news portals, registration fee, determination of the authorities to set the registration fee, running news portals by licensed television channels and radio, IPTV and internet radio channels.
According to the draft amendment of online media policy, licensed television and radio channels will also require the registration to publish their news online.
