Pirates take six of seven from DL tennis

The Crookston Pirates won five matches in straight sets and defeated Detroit Lakes 6-1 in girls tennis Tuesday afternoon in warm temperatures in Crookston.

“I felt like our singles players struggled with the heat a bit,” DL head coach Greg Unruh said. “Mya Anderson played a great match at two singles winning in straight sets. Marit Engum played well, but was beaten in the third set.”

Anderson picked up the Lakers’ victory at two-singles defeating Hanna Lindemoen three and one.

Engum and Brekken Tull split the first two sets, 6-1 to Tull in the first before Engum took control winning at love in the second. Tull earned the victory winning the third set 6-3.

“Doubles is improving,” said Unruh. “We have gone from losing a lot of sets in doubles by 6-1 or 6-0 scores to winning many more games. Our one doubles team of Abby Noll and Harper Bellefeuille played a solid match against Crookston's state qualifying doubles team from a year ago. Harper and Abby have been playing a lot of one doubles matches for us. They have been put in a pretty tough spot considering neither was a varsity player a year ago. I hope they can stay positive, as they are improving with each match. At three doubles, Taylor Winter has played with a lot of different partners. As a senior, Taylor has done a nice job of taking the younger players under her wing. Third doubles has been so close to winning some matches, I hope they can get a W before too long.”
