Coldwater tennis finishes off tough week with loss to Northwest

Cardinals also drop Interstate 8 battle to Parma Western

COLDWATER — The Coldwater Cardinal tennis team saw a tough week of competition come to an end Wednesday night with a heart breaking loss to Northwest by the score of 5-3.

In singles competition the Cardinals took wins at number one and number two singles, both in straight sets. Number one singles player Kyle Sheppard got back on the winning track with a victory via scores of 6-2 and 6-4 while number two singles player Jett Galloway also took a win in straight sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-3.

In doubles action the number three doubles team of Kolby Wagoner and Manny Oritz took the victory, winning in three tough sets. Wagner and Ortiz won the first set in a tiebreak by the score of 7-6, only to drop the second set 5-7, leading to a third and final set. In a back-and-forth battle of wills, it was the team of Wagoner and Ortiz that came out on top, winning 7-6.

Also playing well for Coldwater but falling in their respective flights were number three singles player Josh Small; number four singles player Luke Larr; the number one doubles team of Eric Rucker and Ryan Sturgeon; the number two doubles team of Grady Brockway and Joe Eichorn; and the number four doubles team of Jon Niedzwiecki and Gabe Fisher.

This past Monday the Cardinals faced off with a very good team from Parma Western, falling by the score of 8-0.

Falling in straight sets were Sheppard at number one singles; Galloway at number two singles; Small at number three singles; Larr at number four singles; the team of Rucker and Sturgeon at number one doubles; the team of Brockway and Eichorn at number two doubles; the team of Wagoner and Ortiz at number three doubles; and the humber four doubles team of Niedzwiecki and Fisher.

With the pair of losses the Cardinals fall to 6-8-2 overall on the season and will next see action Monday when they travel to Jackson Lumen Christi.
