Police have confirmed that a 25-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman have been arrested in relation the incident which is understood to be connected with an alleged driving offence.

A resident told the East Kilbride News: "I was in my bed and I got woken up by loud peeping noises - I wondered what in earth was going on.

"I looked out and saw a car had been pulled over by police and there seemed to be a bit of a ruckus, with pulling and shoving between the police who initially stopped the car and those inside.

"Eventually a man was pulled out the car but it looked like they had a struggle and the officers must have called for back-up as at least 10 more of them arrived along with a police van.

"He was eventually pinned to the ground and kept there was a good while before he was taken away in the van and the woman was put in a police car.

"It looked like there was also kiddies in the car. It's not what you expect first thing in the morning."

Another said: "There was police everywhere, I couldn't believe it and from where I was it looked like the man in the car was swinging at police and being violent towards them."

And a third added: "It is usually quiet around here and when I saw all the commotion I first thought it was maybe drug related but it seems it wasn't. I have to say the police didn't have an easy time of it and did well to eventually get the man on the ground."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 8am on Thursday, September 24, officers stopped a car on Newhousemill Road, East Kilbride. During the incident, one officer was assaulted, but did not require any medical treatment.
