The number of new COVID-19 cases was on the upswing in 22 states as the U.S. recorded another 1,000 coronavirus deaths in just 24 hours.
An internal memo from the Federal Emergency Management Agency obtained by ABC News on Wednesday revealed new infections recorded across the United States are increasing by double digits in week-over-week comparisons.
In Kentucky, new cases have increased by 21% since Sept. 13 while its seven-day fatality rate has doubled from 13.4 to 26.4 per 1 million population in the same time frame. According to the memo, the number of tests being conducted statewide dropped by 45.2% during the week of Sept. 17 when compared to the week prior.
Meanwhile, the seven-day case rate in Michigan spiked by 154.4% from Sept. 13 to Sept. 20. Local officials have attributed the uptick to the reopening of schools and colleges, citing the fact that 20-year-olds make up a bulk of the cases there.
The state also reported a 38.1% week-to-week relative increase in COVID-19 testing on Sept. 17.
The FEMA memo also noted a steady rise in the number of hospitals nationwide where intensive care units are at more than 80% capacity.
In Alabama, 90% of ICU beds across two hospitals in Limestone County were in use, according to ABC News. And in Florida’s Leon County, there’s been a 20% increase in pediatric hospitalizations since Aug. 10. Officials there have also attributed the figure to children returning to school.
The memo’s release comes after the United States on Tuesday reached 200,000 deaths associated with coronavirus. In the following 24 hours, another 1,094 people died from the disease, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
The FEMA memo does not indicate an increase in the number of deaths linked to coronavirus.
A total of 6,934,205 people nationwide have been diagnosed with COVID-19 since the pandemic first emerged in the United States earlier this year.
