The moment a Melbourne bus driver was allegedly abused and spat on three times by a passenger has all been captured on video.

Police released the footage on Monday afternoon as they seek to identify a man wanted for questioning over the vile attack.

The bus driver was left with slobber all over his face after picking up the passenger while completing the 246 route from Elsternwick to Clifton Hill.

Sergeant Madeline Gillard said the incident occurred in East Melbourne while the bus was travelling along Punt Rd about 8.30am on August 25.

Police said the man approached the driver and verbally abused him before spitting in the driver’s face three times.

Sgt Gillard alleged the man then tried to punch the driver around the protective screen.

She said the bus driver stopped near the intersection of Wellington Pde and Hoddle St in East Melbourne and directed the passenger to get off the bus after the incident.

The passenger then ran off towards West Richmond train station.

The man is described as African in appearance and was wearing a black beanie and a black jacket with a red collar.

He was also wearing a blue disposal face mask pulled down over his chin.

Transit Safety Division officers have released a CCTV image of a man they believe will be able to assist with their investigation.

It came just over a month after another bus driver was allegedly spat on by a passenger in Brunswick on July 2.
