MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has demolished a part of civic authority-run
Siddharth General Hospital building at Goregaon West on Wednesday without using explosives. The remaining portion of the structure will be demolished in two phases in two weeks, after which a new hospital building will be constructed.
The civic body will construct a new hospital with a capacity of 300-bed at the spot at the cost of around Rs 300 crore which will be beneficial for people living between Western stretch of Jogeshwari and Malad.
The BMC has started the 172-bed hospital at Siddharth Nagar in
Goregaon (West) in 1998 but closed it down last year as the hospital building was in dilapidated condition. They decided to pull down the structure to construct a new hospital building.
The total area of the hospital plot is 2.1 acre and BMC will get construction permission up to 33,588 square metre on it which will help to construct an 11-floor building on the plot. It will be the multi-speciality hospital and the number or bed may be increased during the planning stage said civic officials.
The civic body appointed contractor removed all the live load from the existing building, like windows and doors. Afterward, they demolished all the pillars on which one of the three wings of the building was standing, excluding two to balance the structure.
On Wednesday, with the help of a poclain machine’s long arm, BMC punctured the two pillars one after another. Within a few minutes, the building falls like a pack of cards without disturbing traffic movement on the adjoining road.
The BMC will remove the debris before demolishing the remaining two wings of the building with a similar technique.
