MP: Dalit ‘gangrape victim’ ends life, CM orders action against police officers

The 32-year old woman, from Narsinghpur district, was allegedly raped by three men on September 28. She had reportedly approached Gotitoria police station but the police had not registered an FIR based on her complaint.

A 32-year old Dalit woman in Narsinghpur district died by suicide on Friday. The woman was allegedly raped by three men September 28, however, the police did not register her complaint for four days. The woman ended her life after she was allegedly taunted by her neighbours over the rape incident.

The two policemen, including assistant sub-inspector Mishrilal Kodape, have been booked under section 166 (A) of the Indian Penal Code that punishes a public servant for disobeying law with intent to cause injury to a person.

The woman was allegedly raped by three men, identified as Arvind Chaudhary, Prasu Chaudhary and Anil Rai, when she had gone to the field to cut grass. The woman’s husband along with other family members visited the police station the same night, but were asked to come with the woman’s medical report the next day. Te woman along with her husband and other family members visited Ghotitoria police outpost on multiple occasions but no complaint was registered.

While speaking to the media, the woman’s husband alleged that he and other family members were detained at the police station. “I was asked to pay money instead and had to give the police Rs 5,000 to get out of the police station.”

Meanwhile, on October 1, when the woman stepped out to fetch water from the community tap, she is said to have been taunted by a woman, Leela Bai, and a man, Motilal, following which she ended her life.

Later in the day, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan took congnizance of the matter and ordered a criminal case to be registered against two police officials, including incharge of Ghotitoria outpost, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Mishrilal Kodape, while shunting out additional SP Rajesh Tiwari and sub-divisional officer of police (SDOP) of Gadarwara.

Chouhan took to Twitter and ordered an FIR against the three accused, and said, “Crime against woman will not be tolerated in Madhya Pradesh. Rape accused are devils who have no place in the society.”

The CM further sought an explanation from the Superintendent of Police, Ajay Singh. While speaking to The Indian Express, Ajay Singh said, “Based on the husband’s complaint, all the three accused have been arrested and booked under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code while Motilal and Leela Bai have been booked under Section 306 for abetment to suicide.”

The SO added that a forensic team has been called to gather information from the place of the incident.

The woman’s husband, however, said, “Had the police acted in time, my wife would have been saved.”
