WYFF News 4 gets first look inside newly dug mile-long tunnel

A mile-long underground tunnel in Greenville is one step closer to completion. For the first time, WYFF News got a look at ReWa's Dig Greenville project. The tunnel is 100 feet below ground level and stretches from Cleveland Park to Westfield Street near the Kroc Center.Crews drilled for nine months through solid granite to form the tunnel, which is 11 feet in diameter. The tunnel is not open to the public. Instead, it will be used by ReWa (Renewable Water Resources) to "address some of the community's sewer needs for the next 100 years," according to a ReWa press release. "This gives us and will give the (City of Greenville) additional capacity to accommodate growth in the future," said Jason Gillespie, Project Manager at ReWa. "It'll also give us additional protection against any sewer overflows or things like that." Gillespie said the next step is to install fiberglass pipes inside the tunnel that are 7 feet in diameter. "Now we’re in the process of installing the pipe inside the tunnel, which will take another three or four months," said Gillespie. The project is expected to be finished in May 2021.
