THANE: A man charged with 11 murders and an attempt to murder actor-director Rakesh Roshan was arrested in Kalwa on Friday by Thane city police. Notorious criminal and sharp shooter Sunil Gaikwad (52) had jumped parole in June this year.
Police said that Gaikwad was affiliated with two infamous gangs led by Subash Singh Thakur and Alibadri. A police officer said that he had a total of 11 charges of murder and seven charges of attempt to murder to his name, which included the attempt to shoot at and take the lift of Rakesh Roshan.
In a dacoity incident at Nashik, Gaikwad had shot at a policeman as well.
Gaikwad had been sentenced to life imprisonment, and was lodged at Nashik Central Jail. He left on a 28-day parole on June 26. The police said Gaikwad came to Ghatkopar, and did not return on completion of his parole period. He went into hiding, said the police.
Based on a tip-off, the police traced Gaikwad to Parsik Circle near Kharegaon, Kalwa, said a senior police official. The police laid a trap and caught him around 9pm, near the Kalwa circle. The officer said that Gaikwad would be handed over the Pant Nagar police, where an offence of his escape had been registered.
