Mumbai Power Outage: Electricity back in most areas; train services too resume

A major power outage brought Mumbai and parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region of Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts to a standstill on Monday, owing to a power grid failure.

Mumbai: A train halts at Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus as services were disrupted owing to power failure in many parts of Mumbai, Monday, Oct. 12.

A major power outage brought Mumbai and parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region of Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts to a standstill on Monday, owing to a power grid failure. Areas including Powai, Marol, Goregaon, Versova, Chandivali, Navi Mumbai, Thane city, Thane rural, Andheri Chakala, JB Nagar, Meghvadi, Jogeshwari, Sarvoday Nagar, Konkan Nagar, Hanjar Nagar, Poonam Nagar were off the electricity supply for over 2 hours. Train services too came to a halt in the financial capital.

HIGHLIGHTS:

2:00 PM: Adani Electricity issues statement

"Dear Consumers, as most parts of Mumbai are facing power failure, you may face difficulty accessing our services on 19122. Regret the inconvenience and we thank you for your patience. Our teams are working on ground to restore power supply in affected areas at the earliest."

1:09 PM: Tata power resumes services post 12 noon

12:59 PM: As the power supply is restored in WR's Mumbai Suburban section, all OHEs have been charged at 12.20 hrs and WR's suburban train services are restored between Churchgate & Borivali. Services were already on between Borivali & Virar

12:51 PM: Stem pumping operations have been restored

12:47 PM: Trains between CSMT-Panvel on Harbour Line have resumed. We're trying to restore services between CSMT-Kalyan, CSMT-Karjat/Kasara. Long-distance trains from Mumbai rescheduled, and incoming trains regulated at interchange points: CPRO, Central Railway

12:45 PM: Electricity restored in Andheri East and West

12:43 PM: BMC tweets on power failure, says, "No untoward incident has been reported so far."

12:27 PM: Power supply restored at CST station in Mumbai

12:24 PM: Mumbai power restoration details - The Bhandup NBRS 33 KV substation, EHV GIS 220 KV Bhandup, 33 KV CBD1 and CBD 2,  220 KV Mahape line restored,  220 KV TIFIL,  220KV Bapgaon, 400kv padagha 1, 220kv colourchem, 220kv mulund 1&2 220kv Siemens lines, 220 KV Uran, 400 KV kharghar Kamothe, Roadpalli is  restored and Panvel city restored

12:22 PM: Power has been restored at State Secretariat in Mumbai

12:21 PM: Electricity restored in Washi Division

Washi sector 1 substation and all outgoing feeders supply restored. Area of sector 1 to 8 supply restored. 33kV 19D substation supply restored. All outgoing feeders supply restored. APMC Market and surrounding areas restored

22kV Pawane switching, 22kV Mahape switching, 22kV L&T switching, 22kV krishna steel switching supply restored. MIDC PAWANE area outgoing feeders restoration in progress.

12:19 PM: Electricity restored in some areas

The Bhandup NBRS 33 KV substation, EHV GIS 220 KV Bhandup, 33 KV CBD1 and CBD 2,  220 KV Mahape line restored,  220 KV TIFIL,  220KV Bapgaon, 400kv padagha 1, 220kv colourchem, 220kv mulund 1&2, 220kv Siemens lines, 220 KV Uran, 400 KV kharghar Kamothe, Roadpalli is restored and Panvel city restored.

11:50 AM: Reports emerge of people being stranded in lifts, including at a ministry, due to the power outage. 

11:40 AM: Due to power outage in Mumbai, all hearings, through video conferencing and physical hearings at Bombay High Court are kept on hold, Bar and Bench reports.

11:31 AM: Amitabh Bachchan tweets - 

"Entire city in power outage .. somehow managing this message...keep calm all shall be well. Dongles working. Vodafone is working for me"

11:30 AM: Due to power supply failure in Mumbai region, residents of Mumbai are requested to call on 022-22694727, 022-226947725 and 022-22704403 in case of emergencies - BMC

11:25 AM: Commuters seen waiting at Mulund Station as train services are disrupted due to power outage.

11:20 AM: BMC chief says - 

"All the hospitals to contact their respective SWM transport GARAGE officers to get enough supply of diesel for at least eight hours so that there is no power failures in hospitals especially ICUs. In case of any issues please contact disaster control room for help. CE SWM to coordinate this.

Disaster control and CE M&E To keep stand bye private MOBILE DG SET vehicles handy within next one hour in case power failure continues beyond two hours. Please report to Shri. Narvekar or smt. Sangita Lokhande at DM Control about this every half an hour."

11:15 AM: Passengers wait at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus as local train services take hit.

11:12 AM:  It will take 45 minutes-1 hour to restore the electricity supply in Mumbai.

11:10 AM: Signal not working at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST). 

11:09 AM: The power grid failure has hampered operations at various hospitals in Mumbai as well, especially where COVID-19 patients and those critical are admitted.

11:05 AM: Adani Electricity issues statement

There is a major power grid failure due to which supply is affected in most areas of mumbai. As per grid safety protocols, Adani Power System has been able to sustain and islanded. AEML is currently supplying to critical services in Mumbai Around 385MW through AEML Dahanu generation. Our teams are working to restore the supply in the affected areas at the earliest. We regret the inconvenience caused.

11:02 AM: An official statement - "In view of interruption in Traction power at 10.05 hrs due to Grid failure of Tata Power company, services btwn Churchgate & Borivili are suspended. It shall be resumed as soon as traction power supply is restored. Commuters are requested to cooperate. However, power supply, from MSETCL available at Vasai Road & it has been extended to work essential suburban trains between Borivili to Virar section. Efforts are on to start services in Churchgate-Borivali section. Commuters are requested not to panic & maintain social distancing."

11:00 AM: There is multiple tripping of lines and transformer (Kalwa-padghe and Khargar ICTs) supplying power to Mumbai system. 360 MW supply in Mumbai and suburbs affected. Restoration under process.

10:57 AM: Western Railway local trains shut between Churchgate to Vasai railwau station due to grid failure. 400 KV Line has tripped. Whole MIDC, Palghar, Dahanu lines has affected. It will take one hour to restore the supply, as per EHV team.

10:47 AM: Traffic light systems on the roads have also been affected.

10:45 AM: The electric supply is interrupted due to TATAs incoming electric supply failure. Inconveniences is regretted, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Electricity says in a tweet.
