Watch: Student drives with Delhi constable clinging to car’s bonnet, held

A constable with the Delhi Traffic Police clung to the bonnet of a Hyundai i20 car for “300-400 metres”, even as the driver drove on in the Delhi Cantonment area on October 12 evening.

The driver of the car, 22-year-old student Shubham Kumar, was arrested on the day of the incident.

A case under sections of rash driving, endangering life, obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions, assault to deter public servant from discharge of duty has been registered at the Delhi Cantt. police station.

A 38-second video of the car moving in a zig-zag direction with constable Mahipal Singh Yadav atop the bonnet has surfaced online.

In the video, the driver stops the car, and the constable falls on the busy road, after which the driver flees.

A passer-by on a two-wheeler can be seen giving the constable a lift after the incident.

In the FIR, Yadav states that around 5.10 pm, he saw a car moving in a zig-zag manner from Dhaula Kuan side towards Station Road, heading to Tilak Nagar.

“I tried stopping the car, and the driver slowed down and then suddenly sped. In a bid to save myself, I jumped on the bonnet, and held on to the wiper of the car. He didn’t stop his car even then, I kept telling him to stop. In a bid to hurt me, he drove like that in a zig-zag manner for 300-400 metres,” said Yadav in the FIR.

He further stated that after he fell from the bonnet, the driver fled.

“With the help of the public and staff, we controlled him a kilometre away. There was another person in the car with him, who is 23-years-old,” said constable Yadav.

The accused is a resident of Uttam Nagar. After the incident, constable Yadav was taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital where his MLC was prepared.

A senior police officer said that on the basis of the complaint filed by the traffic constable, an FIR has been registered.
