NTA NEET 2020 result HIGHLIGHTS: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has declared the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2020. The result includes both September 13 and October 14 attempts. The final answer key was released at ntaneet.nic.in by afternoon after which the link had stopped working. Now, the result is available at ntaresults.nic.in, instead.

Odisha’s Soyeb Aftab has topped this year’s NEET by scoring full 720 marks. While Uttar Pradesh’s Akanksha Singh has got rank 2. She has also scored a perfect 720 marks.

This year, over 14.37 lakh candidates appeared for the medical entrance exam on September 13 despite the pandemic. The merit list is yet to be out and will be displayed soon. Every college will release its own cut-off based on which the admission will be granted.

Fewer students appear for NEET 2020

The number of students who appeared this year and subsequently qualified is lesser than that of last year. In 2019, a total of 14,10,755 students appeared for NEET while this year, the number has declined to 13,66,945 despite a rise in the number of registrations. Further, the number of students qualifying has been dropped from 7.97 lakh last year to 7.71 lakh this year.

Most NEET qualifiers from Tripura

A total of 7,71,500 candidates have qualified the exam for which over 13.66 lakh candidates had appeared. The highest number of qualifying candidates is from Tripura (88,889) followed by Maharashtra (79,974).

Odisha’s Soyeb Aftab has topped the NEET securing full marks- 720 — a perfect 100 in the NTA NEET result 2020. Talking about his preparation, Aftab said the lockdown has helped him as it gave him more time to prepare. “During the lockdown, I did not stop preparing for the exam. I used it as an opportunity to focus my preparations. I worked on my shortcomings. I revised and re-revised the topics that I was weak at,” he said.

Is Soyeb Aftab the topper?

Will the merit list has not been released by the National Testing Agency (NTA), several coaching institutes to have the top-ranking students. Allen Coaching which is a competitive exams training institute based in Kota claims to have Soyeb Aftab. Allen claims that the student has got 720 out of 720. Aftab is an 18-year-old boy from Odisha who was enrolled with the Institute for the past two years. The coaching institutes are declaring the 'expected' toppers based on the final merit list.

What happened last year?

Last year, as many as 14,10,755 candidates had appeared for the exam out of which 7,97,042 cleared the examination successfully. Around 7,04,335 candidates belonging to the unreserved category secured marks between 701 and 134. Rajasthan’s Nalin Khandelwal had obtained the All India Rank (AIR) 1 in NEET UG 2019 with 99.9999291 percentile and 701 marks. Among females, Madhuri Reddy from Telangana had topped with 695 marks and all India Rank 7.

How to calculate result based on answer key?

Since the answer key has been released, students can give themselves +4 for every correct answer and deduct one mark for every wrong answer. The question papers, answer key, and OMR sheets can be downloaded at the official websites - nta.ac.in or ntaneet.nic.in.

Is the result declared yet?

The result is not declared yet. The official website still says "soon". Students will have to wait a little longer to check their marks as well as the merit list. however, several institutes are claiming to have their students as the top-ranking candidate. These assumptions are based on the final answer key. The final answer key is out and students can calculate their estimated marks based on that.

Will NEET be released today? What is the exact time?

The Minister of Education Ramesh Pokhriyal has twice said that the NEET result will be declared today. He, however, did not mention the exact time. The NTA website is also displaying "soon" without mentioning the exact time. NEET was earlier expected to be released on October 12 but was then delayed as the NEET phase II exam was held for those who missed it at the first attempt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The JEE Main result too was delayed around midnight and hence, now the same is being expected for NEET result 2020 as well.

Experts believe due to the extra time being available due to delay in the exam due to the pandemic, the marks obtained by students can go higher. How was NEET paper?

Most tutorial owners and students said the exams were easy as questions were straightforward and textbook based.

“NEET exam was on the easier side this year. Questions in biology and chemistry were mostly based on NCERT textbooks as usual. Also, students were better prepared as they had more time,” said Durgesh Mangeshkar, founder, IIT Prakashan.

Lalit Kumar, CMD, Prime Academy, said the exams were easier than in previous years. He also praised the preparation at the exam centres in terms of physical distancing, based on student feedback.

Counselling process


The details and schedule of counselling would be available on the websites of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Medical Education Directorates of States as applicable. The details of Medical Education Directorate of States are given in appendix-IV of the Information Bulletin available on NEET website.

Of the X lakh candidates who registered to appear for the exam, X lakh have managed to clear it. Of those who clear the exam, every year about 1-1.5 lakh go abroad to pursue medicine, this year, academicians are expected fewer students to study abroad, and hence cut-off is likely to rise for admission to top courses.

According to Anurag Tiwari, national academic director, medical, Aakash Educational Services Limited, “While students still have an option to study medicine abroad, the number of students actually doing so was about one per cent of total applicants. How are ties resolved?

In case two or more candidates score the same marks then the following process will be eligible to break a tie

- First preference will be given to candidate scoring higher marks in Botony and Zoology

- If the tie remains, preference will be given to students with higher marks in chemistry

- If the marks continue to tally, the student with less number of incorrect answers will be considered first

- As the last option to break the tie, students who are older in age will be given preference.

Higher cut-off expected this year

The result of NEET exam will be released today, and candidates can expect a higher cut-offs this year as the paper was relatively easy compared to last years. Geeta Jain, Founder of Mediconation said, 'The paper was easy and the physics section was easier as compared to last year so it’s likely to be higher this year. Also, NTA has kept the relaxation for the students this year due to the pandemic. NRI quota in PG Medical, dental courses is not sacrosanct

The Supreme Court held that NRI quota in PG Medical and Dental courses is not “sacrosanct” in any given academic year and private medical colleges are not obligated to earmark such seats for admissions. The top court said that if a medical college or institution or the state regulating authority decides to do away with such quota, then a reasonable notice of such a decision be issued to enable those aspiring for such seats to choose elsewhere.

Special quota for terror attack victims in MBBS, BDS admissions
