NEW DELHI: The Centre on Friday deputed high-level Central teams to five states - Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal – reporting a surge in a number of new Covid-19 cases in recent days.
The teams will support the states in efforts towards strengthening containment, surveillance, testing, infection prevention and control measures, and efficient clinical management of the positive cases, the health ministry said.

On Thursday, 63,371 new cases were recorded from across the country taking the total active caseload to 8.05 lakh. With 8477 new cases, Karnataka was the second-highest contributor to the total tally of fresh cases, followed by Kerala which detected 7,789 new cases on Thursday. West Bengal and Chhattisgarh were also among the top ten states accounting for new cases with 3720 and 2819 cases, respectively during the day.
Kerala, with 94,609 active Covid-19 cases, accounts for 11.8% of the current active infections. The state’s positivity rate is one of the highest in the country at 16.6%, even though Kerala is among those states that have the lowest mortality rates.
Similarly, Karnataka currently accounts for 14.1% of the total active cases in the country. It has a case fatality rate of 1.38% while its current positivity rate is pegged at 11.5%.
The other states to which the Central teams have been sent are Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal. Chhattisgarh too has a high positivity rate of 10.4%, which is much higher than the national average.
Each Central team will comprise of a Joint Secretary, a public health expert and a clinician.
