AGRA: A BJP leader was shot dead in
Uttar Pradesh's Firozabad on Friday. Three bike-borne assailants had opened fire at
Dayashankar Gupta outside his shop late on Friday night.
Atleast three people, including the main accused Viresh Tomar, have been taken into custody and are being questioned, senior superintendent of police Sachindra Patel said.
Dayashankar Gupta, who was the Mandal vice-president, was leaving after closing his shop when he was attacked at a local market.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Soon after the incident, a protest by some family members and supporters broke out near the hospital -- where he was rushed -- as they demanded arrest of the accused. Some protesters also tried to block a road in Agra.
According to locals, Viresh Tomar had recently joined the BJP. Dayashankar Gupta was not happy with this.
Superintendent of police (city) Mukesh Kumar Mishra said, "Viresh Tomar recently had a heated exchange with Dayashankar on Facebook. Viresh Tomar's uncle had earlier contested local village body election from Ratigarhi village in Firozabad against Dayashankar, and he had won the election. The matter is being investigated in detail."
