Chennai Corporation seals T Nagar textile showroom for not ensuring Covid-19 regulations

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation on Tuesday sealed a popular textile showroom in T Nagar as the shop management failed to ensure social distancing norms and other to Covid-19 regulations. The corporation levied a penalty of Rs 5,000 on the showroom on Tuesday.
Videos shared on social media platforms and instant messaging apps on Monday showed a huge crowd at the shop. There was a clearance sale in the showroom on October 18, attracting a huge crowd.
Crowds could be seen inside the store and outside.
“They didn’t follow social distancing on October 18. We levied a penalty on them that day too. However, after the video went viral, we checked the shop again. They didn’t follow Covid rules again. So we locked and sealed the shop. This is like a warning to all shops. We are planning to hold a meeting with all shop owners ahead of the festive season to follow Covid protocols,” said an official.
The corporation has imposed strict rules on businesses to ensure adequate physical distancing inside shops. Customers and employees should wear masks.
There are more than 50 big showrooms in T Nagar.
