Kings XI Punjab vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, Dubai

Pro Tip: Consider the match-ups and scores from recent matches before picking your XI. Take a punt on Chris Gayle as well as Rashid Khan's record against the Kings XI.
Our XI: Jonny Bairstow, KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, David Warner, Nicholas Pooran, Glenn Maxwell, Jason Holder, Mohammed Shami, Rashid Khan, T Natarajan, Ravi Bishnoi.
Substitutes: Manish Pandey, M Ashwin, Mayank Agarwal, Vijay Shankar
Player availability: All players are available for selection except Kane Williamson, who still hasn't recovered from an adductor injury.
NOTE: We might not always be able to tip you off about late injury (or other relevant) updates, so please finalise your team after the toss.
Captain: Chris Gayle
Gayle has scored a half-century and two useful cameos in three innings so far. His only century since the 2018 IPL has also come against the Sunrisers. Against their main strike bowler Khan, Gayle has scored 43 runs in 19 balls in the IPL and has been dismissed only once.
Vice-captain: Rashid Khan
Khan is the highest wicket-taker for the Sunrisers this season, with 12 strikes at an economy of just 5.47. His best figures of 3 for 12 also came against the Kings XI. With some attacking batsmen in the opposition, Khan's prowess in the middle overs could be crucial, a phase where his economy this season is only 5.31.
Hot Picks
David Warner: Though Warner has not scored as many as he did last season, he still looks in respectable touch. He has got 335 runs at an average of 37.22, including six scores of 30-plus in ten innings. That means you would rather have him around.
KL Rahul: Rahul is currently the Orange Cap holder with 540 runs at a strike rate of 135.67. He has scored 50 or more in six out of ten innings this season, including a century. Since 2018, Rahul averages 52.75 against the Sunrisers, against whom he has two fifties in his last three innings.
Jonny Bairstow: Bairstow is only behind Warner among the Sunrisers' highest run-getters so far this season. Given Williamson is likely to miss this game, more responsibility falls on his shoulders. The last time these two teams met, Bairstow scored a belligerent 97.
Differential Picks
Nicholas Pooran: Pooran has been striking the ball well, having hit 22 sixes so far in the tournament with a frequency of a six almost every seven balls. He has scored 295 runs at a strike rate of 183.22, with his highest score of 77 coming against the Sunrisers in their previous encounter.
Ravi Bishnoi: Young Bishnoi has bowled some tough overs in his maiden IPL stint. He has also picked up nine wickets at an impressive economy of 7.91. Bishnoi got 3 for 29 - his best haul this season - the last time these two teams met.
Alternate Scenarios
  • If the Kings XI bat second, there is a good chance of them chasing a big total. In that case, Rahul is a safer option as captain. But if they bat first, go with Gayle.
  • Mayank Agarwal is a good option to replace Glenn Maxwell in your XI. But since Maxwell has recently found some form and might bowl his full quota of overs too, we have gone with him ahead of Agarwal.
