John Pence speaks in Alpena

ALPENA — Alpena saw its first presidential surrogate on Monday as John Pence, nephew to Vice President Mike Pence and adviser to President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign, spoke at the Alpena County Republican Party headquarters.

Pence told the crowd the Nov. 3 election is important to the direction of the country and urged them to vote and take as many people as they can with them.

The vice president, as well as Democratic nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden and his vice presidential nominee, U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris, have also been in Michigan repeatedly over the last month.

Pence told supporters in Alpena that many of America’s values are under attack, as is the Constitution. Despite what the polls may reflect, Michigan is going to be close come election night, he said, and could remain red if voters in rural areas like Northeast Michigan show up like they did in 2016.

“President Trump works hard for you, he works hard for us, and we need to return the favor and get the job done, Pence said. “If we win Michigan it is over for them. You all need to understand the ground under our feet very well could be the finish line and the direct path for four more years.”

Trump narrowly won Michigan in 2016 — the first Republican to win the state since 1988 — helping give him the electoral college victory and win the White House.

Pence also told the Alpena crowd it’s important for conservative adults to share with the younger generation what separates conservatives from liberals to bolster the Republican Party for years to come.
