Assiniboine Community College is moving its rural rotating Comprehensive Health Care Aide program back to Birtle early next year.
According to a Monday news release from ACC, the full-time certificate nursing program will commence on Jan. 11, 2021 with a capacity for 22 students.
“We are pleased to work with Prairie Mountain Health and the community to deliver this program,” Suzanne Nicolas, dean of the School of Nursing at ACC, said in this press release. “The demand for skilled health care aides is immense and we know this program will be able to help support the demand in the province while providing terrific career pathways for individuals to pursue.”
The CHCA program is designed to teach graduates practical skills on how to care for patients and how to communicate in a clinical setting, while also learning the best way to help patients within their health care environment.
While Birtle has hosted the program from 2014 to 2018, ACC has also set up rural rotating sites in Souris, Carberry, Glenboro, Crystal City, Virden and a variety of First Nations communities within the Prairie Mountain Health region.
Even though ACC received submissions from three different communities in June, the college decided to bring the program back to Birtle, which is located roughly 150 kilometres west of Brandon.
“The Prairie View Municipal council is extremely pleased that the Assiniboine Community Centre’s Health Care Aid program will once again be available at the Birtle Collegiate Institute,” said Reeve Linda Clark. “With our aging population, this training and these positions are so important to our rural communities and our people.”
