Arsene Wenger has taken aim at the controversial plans to form a European Super League as he believes it would 'destroy' the Premier League.

It was reported earlier this month that Liverpool and Manchester United have been in 'talks' to join a new European Super League.

The FIFA-backed tournament would involve Europe's biggest football clubs and "reshape the sport's global landscape".

Clubs from England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain are said to be in negotiations about becoming founder members of the league.

Up to five English clubs could be involved, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur all named as clubs who could possibly take part alongside the Reds and United.

The news came just a few weeks after Project Big Picture’s bold but controversial proposals to restructure English football were released into the public domain.

However, the plans, backed by Man United chiefs and Liverpool owners FSG, were rejected by teams from the top-flight at a Premier League shareholders meeting.

And Wenger believes the creation of a new European League could have a catastrophic impact on the English game, and the driving forces behind it are simply out to 'make more money'.

“The Premier League has a superiority. The project [Big Picture] wanted to reinforce this superiority,” the former Arsenal boss told the Guardian.

“The other leagues tried to destroy the advantage the Premier League has. For them, the best thing to attain that is to create a European league.

“So that means to destroy the Premier League, basically. So if they get the agreement from the English big clubs, it will happen.”

Before Wenger continued: “It is football as well. But of course, we are in a period of owners who are investors.

“What are the investors' first target? It's to make more money. And so that the European Super League is one way maybe to make more money.”

However, FIFA president Gianni Infantino recently moved to claim he is "not interested" in a European Super League involving Liverpool or any other club.

He said: “As FIFA president, I’m interested in the Club World Cup, not the Super League. For me, it’s not about Bayern Munich against Liverpool, but Bayern against Boca Juniors.

“Liverpool have 180 million fans worldwide. Flamengo have 40 million fans and 39 million of them are in Brazil. Liverpool have maybe five million fans in England and 175 million fans around the world.

“I want clubs from outside Europe to have global appeal in the future. That’s my vision: to have 50 clubs and 50 national teams who can become world champions.”
