A popular Indian restaurant is offering a free curry to schoolchildren this week.

Bengal Spice on Station Road in Redcar is offering a free biryani meal to youngsters until Sunday, November 1.

The kind gesture is being made following the news that Tory MPs voted against extending the free school meals scheme over the school holidays.

The announcement caused a major backlash, especially as three local Conservative MPs - Simon Clarke, Jacob Young and Matt Vickers - all voted against the proposal.

The Mill in Stokesley was so disgusted, it announced that the Teesside MPs - and Chancellor Rishi Sunak whose constituency covers Stokesley - are now barred from both the The Mill pub and its Il Mulino restaurant 'for life.

As a response, many restaurants and eateries decided to provide free meals for school children.

"Any child aged between four to 16 can come between 5pm and 6pm from Saturday, October 24, to Sunday, November 1 to collect a free chicken or vegetarian biryani.

"Just turn up in a safe manner (with an adult if you are very young) and we will support you. We will do our part to help.

"This may literally be a life saver for someone."

It added: "And if you are a business owner, please do consider doing this yourself. Good only begets good.

"We have to help each other during these very difficult times."

Following the backlash, football star Marcus Rashford vowed to keep campaigning to extend free school meals over the holidays after MPs voted against the measure.

The Manchester United player told politicians to "stop stigmatising, judging and pointing fingers" as he warned a "significant number" of children will go to bed hungry.

More than a million people have since signed his petition.

The number of signatories had reached 1,001,500 on Wednesday afternoon.
