Donald Trump was forced to hold a socially distanced rally tonight - and his problems did not end there.

After travelling for several hours to speak at the rally, it was plagued with sound problems - with the microphone being inaudible on broadcasts of the speech for much of the time.

And the President completed his stump speech, which frequently runs to more than an hour, in around 21 minutes.

Just 250 people were allowed into the rally proper, all seated six feet apart from each other in the Rochester, Minnesota airfield.

But many more crowded outside the boundaries of the rally site, crowded together and largely mask-free.

On his arrival, Trump told reporters Minnesota Governor Tim Walz "wants to play games."

"He's a weak governor, he's done a terrible job. He doesn't know what the hell he's doing."

He added that "thousands of people are being injured" by not being allowed into his rally.

Speaking to fans who were not allowed into the rally, the President was presented with a portrait of himself, painted by a supporter.

During his speech, he again moaned about having to comply with restrictions designed too stop the spread of a deadly virus.

"We were given a very, very hard time by your so-called leaders," he said.

"As you know there are at least 25,000 people who wanted to be here tonight, we just saw a lot of them. We wanted to pay our respects, they were here for a long time. They waited and waited. And then the governor did bad things.

"Your far-left Attorney General Keith Ellison and your Democrat Governor tried to shut down our rally, silence the people of Minnesota and take away your freedom and your rights."

Some viewers noted the President's apparent lack of enthusiasm, which made him appear tired.

Minnesota, which has not voted for a Republican presidential candidate since 1972, is one of the few Democratic states that Trump is trying to flip this year.

Earlier in the day, Joe Biden also gave a speech in the state.

But he was repeatedly interrupted by a group of Trump supporters, who disrupted his speech by constantly beeping horns, blowing whistles and shouting "Joe's a crook".

Dr Fauci called for a mask mandate last week, this isn’t a political statement like those ugly folks over there beeping their horns, this is a patriotic duty for God sake,” Biden said.

He added: "These guys are not very polite but they’re like Trump. But look, they’re going to be OK.

"We’re going to take care of them as well. We need to come together, made a fight for all these folks."
