IPL 2020, DC vs MI: Mumbai Indians maintained their dominance in the Indian Premier League as the defending champions secured an emphatic 9-wicket win over Delhi Capitals. The team have already qualified for the playoffs and the result tonight gives them a great chance of finishing the league as the leaders.
It all started with Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah rattling the Delhi Capitals batting line-up. After electing to bowl, Boult started off by removing both Delhi openers – Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan – inside the powerplay overs. Bumrah was introduced in the middle overs and he didn’t take long to get his name on the wicket list. Both the bowlers finished with three wickets as they restricted Delhi Capitals to a paltry 110/9 after 20 overs. .
In response, Quinton de Kock and Ishan Kishan gave Mumbai the perfect start. The pair added 68 before De Kock was removed by Anrich Nortje. However, Kishan continued his carnage as he finished unbeaten on 72 from 47 balls, helping Mumbai close the game in just 14.2 overs.
Match 51, Dubai International Cricket Stadium, 31 Oct, 2020
Ishan Kishan finishes thing in style. He hits Anrich Nortje over the mid-wicket fence for a maximum as his unbeaten 72 from 47 balls help Mumbai Indians chase the 111-run target in 14.2 overs.
Finally some rejoice for Delhi Capitals as Anrich Nortje removes Quinton de Kock on his return. A good length delivery and De Kock tried to guide it towards the third-man region. However, after hitting the bat the ball bounces inside the crease and hits the top off the stumps. That will be the end of De Kock as he departs after scoring 26 from 28 balls. MI: 68/1 (10.2 overs)
Ishan Kishan slams Praveen Dubey for consecutive boundaries as Mumbai Indians reach 68/0 after 10 overs. Kishan is playing on 41 from 34 balls.
Just when Delhi Capitals thought they got their first man here, Ishan Kishan decides to take DRS. It was a tossed up delivery and Kishan went for some unorthodox shot. However, he fails to get any connection and ball hits his pads. Huge appeal by Praveen Dubey and the umpire raised his finger.
However, Kishan knew that the ball was not hitting the stumps and went for the review straightaway. TV replay confirmed the batsman is right as Kishan survives.
With eight overs gone Mumbai are batting on 48 for no loss.
The powerplays are done and both batsmen complete a splendid job. A total of 38 runs come from it, with Ishan hitting 22 (20) and his partner De Kock getting 16 (16). Mumbai Indians need 73 runs in 84 balls
One boundary for De Kock and two for Ishan Kishan as Anrich Nortje starts off with an expensive over. 13 runs come off it as MI add 23/0 after 4 overs.
Things are kept tight so far by Delhi Capitals but some sloppy fielding by Harshal Patel helps Mumbai sneak three runs here. The ball was on the wickets and a gentle push by De Kock goes towards the mid-wicket area. Patel goes after the ball but misfields it on the first attempt, giving both De Kock and Ishan Kishan the extra time to take the extra run. MI: 7/0 (2 overs)
Ishan Kishan will take the strike with Quinton de Kock standing at the non-striker's end. Delhi will start off with spin as R Ashwin comes to bowl the first over.
Jasprit Bumrah executes a good run-out on his followthrough to dismiss Kagiso Rabada in the final delivery of the Delhi inning. With this Delhi complete 20 overs with 110/9 on the board.
Boult is brought back into the attack and he strikes in his first delivery. Ashwin tries to go big but fails to get the desired connection as the ball flies straight in the air and is caught brilliantly by Krunal Pandya in the end. DC: 96/8 (18.1 overs)
A loose shot by Shimron Hetmyer as he plays a short delivery by Nathan Coulter-Nile straight into the pockets of Krunal Pandya at the deep mid-wicket region. That was some careless batting, considering the situation. DC lose their seventh wicket. DC: 78/7 (15.2 overs)
Bumrah is on fire, the batsman picks his third wicket of the day and this time it's Harshal Patel who has to take the long walk back to the pavilion. The ball was pitched up with great pace and the batsman tried to knock it down the on-side. However, he doesn't get any connection and the ball hits the pads right in front of the stumps. DC: 73/6 (14 overs)
Jasprit Bumrah strikes again in the same over and this time he gets the wicket of settled Rishabh Pant. A good length delivery, coming towards the left-hander. Pant tries to defend it, but the ball hits his pads and after a huge appeal, the umpire raises his finger.
Pant, however, decides to take a review but TV replay shows it was hitting the stumps. The batsman depart for 21. DC: 62/5 (11.4 overs)
Jasprit Bumrah joins the party. A short delivery angling towards Marcus Stoinis and he gets an outside edge, which flies straight into the gloves of Quinton de Kock. DC are struggling here as they lose their fourth wicket. DC: 57/4 (11.1 overs)
Great wicketkeeping by Quinton de Kock as he executes a brilliant stumping off Rahul Chahar's delivery to send Shreya Iyer back in the dugout. Chahar beats Iyer with the flight and the batsman didn't even step out of his crease. He just lifted his leg in the air and that was enough for De Kock to execute a smart stumping. The batsman departs on 25. DC: 50/3 (10.2 overs)
We have reached the halfway mark here and Delhi Capitals are trying to build from the early blows. The pair of Iyer and Pant have added 34 runs from 42 balls to take Delhi Capitals to 49/2. How much more can Delhi add in the final 10 overs?
Finally a good over for Delhi Capitals as Shreyas Iyer hits Jayant Yadav for a SIX and fetch 12 runs from it. After 8 overs, Delhi Capitals are batting on 40/2.
The powerplay overs are done and Mumbai would be very confident after what they have produced so far. Just 22 runs from the first six overs, which also included the wickets of Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw.
Some confusion in the middle as both Boult and De Kock go a half-hearted appeal for a caught behind. Meanwhile, Pollard has taken the review but TV replay confirms that the ball passed very close to the bat but there was no connection. Shreyas Iyer survives but MI lose their review. DC: 18/2 (4.1 overs)
Just when things were looking good for both Prithvi Shaw and Delhi Capitals, the youngster makes a mistake. The batsman had already smashed Boult for two boundaries in the over and in an attempt to get the third one, he throws away his wicket. A short delivery and the batsman tried to play it across the line, but it takes the edge and flies high in the air. Quinton de Kock calls for the catch and completes it without any discomfort. Shaw departs for 10 as Delhi lose both their openers. DC: 15/2 (3 overs)
After a tight one-run over by Trent Boult, Krunal Pandya will continue Mumbai's attack from the other end. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer joins Shaw in the middle.
Big big big wicket for Mumbai as Shikhar Dhawan walks back on 0. Slightly wide and Dhawan tries to open the face of his bat. Unfortunate for the batsman as his shot falls right in front of Suryakumar Yadav, who takes a good low catch. DC: 1/1 (0.3 overs)
Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan walk out in the middle to kick-off the proceedings. Shaw will be taking the strike as Trent Boult leads the Mumbai attack.
Mumbai Indians: Quinton de Kock(w), Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Saurabh Tiwary, Krunal Pandya, Kieron Pollard(c), Nathan Coulter-Nile, Rahul Chahar, Jayant Yadav, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah
Delhi Capitals: Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer(c), Rishabh Pant(w), Shimron Hetmyer, Marcus Stoinis, Harshal Patel, Kagiso Rabada, Ravichandran Ashwin, Praveen Dubey, Anrich Nortje
Mumbai Indians win toss, elect to field first.
Going by paper, MI definitely have a clear-cut edge over DC and having confirmed their last four berth, the title holders would be playing without any pressure.
Regular skipper Rohit Sharma, who missed the last three games due to a left-leg hamstring injury, is unlikely to take the field again on Saturday, but there is no substantial word from the MI management in this regard yet.
Despite three defeats on the trot against Kings XI Punjab, KKR and Sunrisers Hyderabad, DC are placed third with 14 points from 12 games, courtesy their consistent run in the first phase of the league.
The three defeats should come as an eye opener for DC as they can ill-afford to take things lightly and need at least a win to seal their play-off place.
But it won’t be an easy task as their last two games are against the top two teams on the table — MI and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
If DC lose their last two games, it is entirely possible that KXIP will go past them on NRR even if they finish on 14 points and in such a case, the Delhi side could be eliminated if other teams on 14 have a higher NRR.
